Exclusive: M. Ward Unearths Never-Before-Seen “Never Had Nobody Like You” Video

M. Ward has been a cornerstone of Paste since the beginning, and you can even read Julie Simmons’s profile on him in 2004 here. In September, Merge Records unveiled a greatest hits collection for Ward titled For Beginners, an assemblage of Ward’s very best material, including songs like “Poison Cup,” “Cry,” “Lullaby + Exile” and my personal favorite, “Never Had Nobody Like You.”

In the midst of that process, Ward unearthed a video of “Never Had Nobody Like You” that is over 15 years old. It’s a fun piece of nostalgia that, thanks to modern technology, has been given a touch-up and made ready for 2024. Ward says of the video: “this video is a time warp to a different era in portland that feels a bit like ancient history—thanks to alan tanner who directed and was able to capture genuine obama-era happiness at the wonder ballroom circa 2009.”
