Mac DeMarco Unveils Two New Tracks as Met Gala

After last night’s Met Gala, Mac DeMarco has apparently formed an impromptu new band, also called the Met Gala, and they unveiled two wacky new singles, “She’s My Sweet” and “Fuck The Toronto Raptors.”

DeMarco shared two new songs on Monday night, which, according to the YouTube description, were “recorded earlier today on the red carpet.” Skepticism about that comment aside, the Met Gala lineup includes DeMarco alongside Colin Caulfield (DIIV), Alex Meen, Peter Sagar (Homeshake), Greg Napier (Homeshake), Sadie Holliday, Andrew Neville and Caila Thompson.

There are some strange credits listed in the video description—among the strangest, DeMarco is credited with “computer, waves plugin, vocal hooks, autotune,” Meen is credited with various keyboards and Schafer beer, Holliday is credited with “Iphone 8+ camera, finger snaps, and pastrami stir fry,” Neville is credited with finger snaps and was given the role of “basketball consultant,” and Thompson was also credited with finger snaps and given the role of Sagar’s vocal coach.

The two songs are goofy, lo-fi tracks with little structure and lots of auto-tune. There’s a bit of a soul, funk and R&B feel to them with some solid keyboard riffs, but DeMarco cuts through the serious mood with his repetitive, auto-tuned vocals, and his eccentric lyrics and subject matter.

DeMarco recently released a vinyl LP via Captured Tracks for April’s Record Store Day. The 15-track album featured demos on Side A and instrumentals on Side B from his 2017 album This Old Dog.

DeMarco will be playing a handful of North American dates in August and September, including four consecutive Los Angeles dates and shows in Philadelphia, New York, Morrison, Colo. and Washington, D.C.
