Madison Cunningham Announces Deluxe Edition of Grammy-Winning Album Revealer

Earlier this year, California singer-songwriter Madison Cunningham took home a Grammy Award for Best Folk Album for her third album, Revealer. The record was a deep well of thematic introspection and vulnerable truth-seeking, due much in part to the standout tracks “Hospital,” “Life According to Raechel” and “Who Are You Now.” She took home the golden microphone over legacy acts like Judy Collins, Janis Ian and the Punch Brothers, and, when listening to Revealer, it’s clear that Cunningham doesn’t play into the same folk architecture as them. However, her lyricism tackles a part of the genre that is unbound to any generation: emotional, unabashed musings on her own life told through a thoughtful lens and sharp arrangements.

Today, Cunningham’s announced a deluxe edition of the record, which will feature six extra tracks, including her “Hospital (One Man Down)” remix, which she put together with Remi Wolf and demos of “Who Are You Now” and “Life According to Raechel.” The diamond in the rough, however, is the previously unheard song “Inventing The Wheel,” which she’s released as her first post-Grammys single. “Inventing The Wheel” is a patient detour from the guitar hooks on the rest of the record. It’s a sweet, subtle indie folk tune that finds Cunningham meditating on the multitudes of life’s expectations and looming fragility. “She’s the spitting image of her old man in a spiral / The more responsibility, the more you crave denial / The wind speaks like an orator, some message from the wild / Like the courage of a mother letting go of her first child,” she sings.

The deluxe edition of Revealer will be out on May 5 through Verve Forecast. Check out a visualizer for “Inventing The Wheel” below.
