Last week, one of the best tours in recent years, Philadelphia’s Mannequin Pussy and Soul Glo, made a stop at Brooklyn Steel in New York City. The creators of two of the best albums of the last five years, I Got Heaven and Diaspora Problems, joining forces for one loud, cathartic and glorious night will go down in the history books. In 2022, Soul Glo’s Diaspora Problems landed at #6 on our greatest albums of the year list and has only continued to rise in the two trips around the sun since.

Critic Pat King wrote that Diaspora Problems “should be viewed as nothing short of a new tectonic shift in the world of hardcore punk.” “Listening to Diaspora Problems, you get the sense that Soul Glo are less concerned with getting the opportunity to perform a medley of new tunes on a prestigious late-night spot than hanging behind to dismantle the stale conventions of the often white male-dominated underground scene they cut their teeth in,” King continued. “And my goodness, do Soul Glo deliver.”

This March, Mannequin Pussy released their long-awaited fourth album, I Got Heaven, to widespread critical reverence. In her 8.2/10 review for us, critic Victoria Wasylak wrote that the album’s “purrs deepen into growls at the mention of leashes and collars, while control often manifests through visceral imagery: hearts splitting open, minds ablaze and carved bodies served on a silver platter.” You can read our full profile on Mannequin Pussy here.
