28-year-old singer-songwriter Maren Morris appeared on Monday night’s Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to perform the title track from GIRL, her recently released sophomore album. The Grammy winner out of Arlington, Texas, and her band delivered a rendition of “Girl” that prompted a giddy Fallon to gush, “That is how you do it!”
“Girl” made streaming history upon its release, notching the highest debut on Billboard’s Country Streaming Songs chart by a female artist, as well as the highest weekly streams by a female country artist ever. It’s the opening track on GIRL, which follows three years after Morris’ breakout debut Hero.
Paste’s Ellen Johnson lauded GIRL as “a savvy, fiery portrait of an imperfect woman chasing attainable pop glory in a post-Golden Hour world” in her review of the record, calling the title track “the sonic equivalent of a shoulder to cry on, an empowering, chin-up anthem made for the masses—but don’t you dare wallow in it.”
Morris is now on her GIRL World Tour’s North American leg, with her first-ever headlining show at Nashville’s legendary Ryman Auditorium set for this Wednesday, March 13. She’ll make stops in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, Philadelphia and New York before moving on to Europe and Australia in the coming months.
