Daily Dose: Margaret Glaspy, “Before We Were Together”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

Two years after her stellar 2016 debut Emotions & Math, Margaret Glaspy just surprise-dropped a new EP, Born Yesterday. She’s also premiering a brand new track, “Before We Were Together,” which details a tricky breakup situation: when you’re the one doing the breaking, but it still sucks.

“I don’t like it any more than you do,” Glaspy admits over a churning guitar. “I’m damned if I do, and I’m damned if I don’t say it/ Life was better before we were together.”

“I wrote these songs on the road, in my hotel, on the plane, and at soundcheck,” Glaspy said in a press release about Born Yesterday. “They were the product of the little time that I had to myself – three songs about different sides of love: love gone wrong, love gone right, and love at a distance.”
