Mary Chapin Carpenter – The Essential

Carpenter went to an Ivy League college and worked for a human rights organization (funded by R.J. Reynolds tobacco) until Columbia Nashville scooped her up in 1986. Her literate songwriting and musical blend of folk, rock, blues, singer-songwriter and country goes against every formula Nashville ever loved, but her string of CMA awards and Grammys speaks for itself. Essential gives a quick overview of her impressive singing and songwriting talent with 16 tracks that range from the Cajun bounce of “Down at the Twist and Shout,” featuring BeauSoleil, to the raunchy honky-tonk rock of “I Feel Lucky” and “10,000 Miles,” a nod to her folk roots from the Fly Away Home soundtrack.
