As indie-country trio Maybe April gear up for their debut album, the group has dropped their first single from the record, “You Were My Young.” Although it’s a song of love and heartbreak, it’s also, to a degree, the origin story of Maybe April. Multi-instrumentalists Katy Bishop, Kristen Castro and Alaina Stacey met when they were 18-19 and bonded over the heartbreak each faced after the end of their respective high school relationships.
The video for “You Were My Young” follows this story line, depicting a couple hanging out together in their small town. Interspersed are clips of the trio looking through memory boxes and reminiscing over the old trinkets they find. “Eighteen broke our hearts,” the lyrics ring out, “we grew up, but you were my young.” The song is warm with familiarity and Stacey’s lead vocals wind through smoothly, even as the couple in the video drifts apart, their relationship broken up by college acceptance letters from opposite coasts and the impending end of summer. The balmy three-part harmonies give the vocals depth while creating a feeling of solidarity in the song’s lyrical journey. “You were a promise ring that I still have,” Stacey sings, and at the end of the video, the girl slips off her promise ring into a memory box.
