While he’s been steadily releasing a handful of singles over the past couple of years (“Undertow” and “Breathe” in May, “I Don’t Mind” and “Blue Eyed Girl” in early 2017), it’s been a long four years since California rocker Mikal Cronin has released an album. That long wait ends today: Cronin has announced his long-awaited fourth album, Seeker, out on Oct. 25 via Merge Records, which follows years of touring and writer’s block.
Along with the announcement, Cronin unveiled “Show Me,” a track that combines a Brendan Benson-esque power-pop guitar riff with a gorgeous string section. It all builds up to a final jam that combines a bruising guitar solo, descending strings and a keyboard line that’d make Jack White smile. The longtime Ty Segall collaborator (Seeker features Segall’s Freedom Band throughout) had this to say about the new song:
“Show Me” is a song about feeling small in an overwhelming world. There’s a not-quite-subtle hint of the Heartbreakers in the instrumentation and arrangement, having asked many friends to play or sing. It’s one of my favorite songs from the album, I hope you like it too.
Cronin also released the music video for “Show Me,” directed by Yasi Salek. It depicts a nightmarish drive in a 1964 Ford Falcon, with his friends and collaborators playing their instruments while wearing animal masks.
Cronin is gearing up for an extensive world tour later this year and into 2020. Check out the full itinerary, plus the album art and Seeker’s tracklist, below.
