Miya Folick Announces New Album Erotica Veronica, Shares Sensual Music Video
Erotica Veronica follows Miya Folick's vibrant, synth-heavy 2018 debut Premonitions and 2023 record Roach.
Photo by Jonny MarlowWhen society gives you a script to read off of, sometimes it’s easier to just slip into the part handed to you, forcing yourself to fit a mold that may not exactly fit. But indie-pop chameleon Miya Folick isn’t one for doing things by the book. Today, she announces her new self-produced album Erotica Veronica (out February 28, 2025 via Nettwerk), which explores what it’s like “being queer within a heteronormative relationship structure and within a heteronormative society” and also “desire and eroticism in general.” Folick eschews societal expectations on her new LP, adding, “I don’t think we give each other enough room to explore freely and figure out our own right paths.”
In this vein of unapologetic freedom, the album’s announcement is accompanied by the LP’s opening track, “Erotica,” and a glossy, sensual video directed by Antonio Marziale. The scenes feature two Folicks: one behind a control board, pressing buttons to stimulate the second Folick, who’s trapped behind a two-way mirror dressed just in her skivvies.
“‘Erotica’ is a song about fantasy and pleasure—it’s not just about sex, it’s about a richness of experience, a playfulness, a connection, an open approach to each day,” she explains. “I think that we’re fed rules about what an appropriate fantasy looks like, especially when you’re coupled. Our culture is so puritanical in that way. But I think that it’s important for me to retain my autonomy of thought, and truthfully sharing my fantasies is an act of tenderness and intimacy.” And while the song itself is rooted in fantasy, Folick’s lyrics also revel in the imperfect textures of daily life: “I just wanna flirt with a girl in broad daylight on the street / I can see her chapped lips, burnt by the sun, as she’s leaning into me.”
Erotica Veronica follows her vibrant, synth-heavy 2018 debut Premonitions and 2023 record Roach. Written in just a month and a half, this coming LP sees Folick favoring guitar-forward songs and full takes. Collaborators on Erotica Veronica include co-producer and drummer Sam KS (Youth Lagoon, Angel Olsen); guitarists Meg Duffy (Hand Habits, Perfume Genius), Waylon Rector (Dominic Fike, Charli XCX) and Greg Uhlmann (Perfume Genius, SML); and bass courtesy of Pat Kelly (Perfume Genius, Levi Turner).
