Back in December, Morrissey announced a forthcoming covers album titled California Son, due out May 24 via Etienne Records/BMG. Tuesday, the Smiths frontman released his first single from the project: a cover of Roy Orbison’s melancholy “It’s Over.”
Morrissey released his last studio album, Low in High School, in 2017, along with an extended edition of the LP released last year. California Son will explore classic ballads of the ‘60s and ‘70s (think Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell), and feature a host of notable collaborators paying homage, including Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear, Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, Ariel Engle of Broken Social Scene, Sameer Gadhia of Young the Giant and Lydia Night of The Regrettes.
