Mutts is a truly dynamic band. Already championing an impressive output of music (4 full-lengths and a handful of EPs) singer/songwriter Mike Maimone and his crew are constantly exploring a variety of genres. Their music takes on the structure of classic blues and rock songs but twists them into garage rock anthems. There are moments in this session that bring up the “sunglass-stare cool” ethos of the Black Keys, pounding drums and fuzz-laden guitar included; others that promote a more generous, old school piano blues in the vein of Leon Russell. This session finds the group honing in on their roots, allowing for sweet piano crooning to match up with punk-rock levels of guitar distortion. The band proves their song writing versatility on songs like “Tin Foil Hat,” which made its way onto their latest EP, “Stick Together”—a title that retains the political undertones of its lyrical content. On “Tin Foil Hat,” Mutts creates a world in which the lyric “Gotta get up outta the city / Heading out to the countryside” can occur alongside shouts and chants that are reminiscent of classic punk bands. Mutts excels at creating brand new sounds out of older parts, like some mythological mechanic who can fix up all your favorite things and make them run just as smooth as they did in their glory days.
