Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and Third Man Records darling Natalie Bergman is set to release her sophomore album, My Home is Not in This World, on July 18. It’s the awaited follow-up to her 2021 solo debut Mercy, which we got to hear up-close during Bergman’s Paste Session that year. “The title is an acknowledgement of my longing for this place over yonder,” Bergman says of the new record. “It represents my desire to not be a part of what’s going on digitally. I was trying to be the antithesis of a lot of modern music. There are some earthy sounds and many of the songs are about love. At the same time, it’s about finding my place on earth—even though I’ve never truly felt like I belonged here.”
The My Home is Not in This World lead single “Gunslinger” is a genre-surfing, cinematic instant classic. Flirting with desire and disaster, Bergman pays tribute to an outlaw she can’t quite get out of her mind. With a stringed backdrop, multi-bass, and Laurel Canyon-colored melody glued together by her brother Elliot’s Nashville organ, Natalie Bergman’s lead guitar lines on “Gunslinger” warm in retro structures and anthemic tangents. Detailed verses shrink into singalong choruses, as “He could have a wandering eye, he can take me down with his smile” turns into “If you take me back, baby won’t you take me back.” “Gunslinger” is hot and bothered, spellbound by mystery and a suitcase “filled with small treasures.”
