Exclusive: Native Harrow Share Meditative New Single, “Can’t Go On Like This”

New York folk-pop outfit Native Harrow have shared their new single exclusively at Paste. “Can’t Go On Like This” comes to us from their new album, Happier Now, out on April 12 via Different Time Records. Happier Now is Native Harrow’s third album and the follow-up to 2017’s Sorores.

“Can’t Go On Like This” calls to mind the folk-pop giants of yesteryear, but vocalist and guitarist Devin Tuel’s flowy, spiritual voice is timeless, and its fluttering beauty will spark a lump in your throat. Wrapped around a general sense of self-doubt are discernible tones of gentle warmth and humble charm, and its healing qualities shouldn’t be underestimated.

Tuel explains the track’s backstory:

“Can’t Go On Like This” came about after the people in my life and strangers I chatted with while on the road last year all seemed to say, “Your life is amazing. It must be nice to be on a perpetual road trip playing music. I wish I could do something like that.” They were unhappy in their jobs or their relationships and they appeared to be very fragile in that feeling. Over time, I found myself thinking we all have moments where we are like “I have to keep going but I really don’t know if I can.” And personally I believe when I am having a rough go of it I tend to look backwards and wish I was a kid feeling that special kind of freedom again.

Native Harrow will also be touring with Canadian folk rockers Great Lake Swimmers in February. When they play live, Tuel and multi-instrumentalist Stephen Harms utilize vintage gear like arch-top guitars and a two-piece drumkit from the ’40s to compliment their retro soundscapes.
