Studio 54 Documentary Trailer Brings Debauchery Back

On an April night in 1977, a new club by the name of Studio 54 unleashed a torrent of pleasure and spectacle in New York City. Hedonists rolled through by the hundreds—all races, genders and sexualities slinking around in reckless abandon across the dance floor. Under the glitz of the disco ball, Studio 54 brought sex, drugs and debauchery to a fever pitch in the city—an unsustainable one, at that. A new documentary, Studio 54, brings us back to when the ball lasted.

Directed by Matt Tyrnauer, Studio 54 follows the rise of club owners Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager as they built an electrifying nightlife scene and then watched it buckle under the weight of drugs and shoddy book-keeping. The film includes never-before-seen interviews and footage from the club, featuring the likes of Diana Ross, Liza Minelli, Nile Rogers and other influential figures of the era.

Having originally premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival, Studio 54 will arrive in theaters on June 15. An official trailer for the film was released Monday, and you can check it out below.
