Neyla Pekarek Announces First Solo Tour Since Exiting The Lumineers

Neyla Pekarek has announced her first tour dates as a solo artist.

Formerly of The Lumineers, Pekarek will tour in support of her solo debut Rattlesnake, out Jan. 18, 2019, on S-Curve Records/BMG. She will join her fellow Denver natives Devotchka on a tour through much of the U.S. Southeast and Southwest.

“I’m so thrilled to announce I’ll be opening for my Denver pals, Devotchka,” said Pekarek in a statement. “I am always blown away by their creativity and musicianship, and I’m so honored to get to be a part of this iconic tour!”

Pekarek will tour with Devotchka for a run of nine of shows, beginning Jan. 31 in Kansas City, Mo. What’s more, Neyla will also make her Grand Ole Opry debut at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn., on Jan. 19, and perform at the BMI Showcase at Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 29 in Park City, Utah, before making her solo music festival debut at Bluebird Music Festival in Boulder, Colo., in May.

Rattlesnake is a concept album about Kate Slaughterback, better known as Rattlesnake Kate, a forgotten feminist heroine of the West. The record’s 13 original songs were written as what Neyla calls a “Folk Opera,” recounting the incredible tales from Kate’s life. Said stories include her victory over a mob of rattlesnakes, a 40-year love letter correspondence with a man she never met, and more.

“Western history is so often dominated by the stories of men, and while those are fascinating tales, many stories of Western women have gone untold,” Pekarek told Paste earlier this month. “As I share the story of Rattlesnake Kate, more times than I can count, someone remarks, ‘Oh, just like Annie Oakley,’ and while Annie Oakley was certainly a remarkable person, she was a different person, who lived at a different time period with a different story to tell. And I thought it was unfair to sum all western women’s stories up by just one woman’s experience.”
