English singer-songwriter Nick Mulvey has released a new track called “Unconditional” via Harvest Records. This is his first new music since his 2014 Mercury Prize-nominated debut, First Mind. “Unconditional” was produced by Ethan Johns and Dan Carey, and the video was directed by Björk collaborator Bastian Glaessner.

Mulvey has had a couple of successful reinventions over the years. In 2008, he was first nominated for a Mercury Prize for the album Knee-Deep in the North Sea by Portico Quartet, a jazz ensemble he founded and for which he played the hang drum. However by 2011, Mulvey left Portico Quartet to pursue a more personal path as a folk-rooted solo singer-songwriter.

Having studied music and art in Havana, Cuba, for a few years and then returning to the U.K. to University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies, Mulvey has an abundance of genres at his fingertips. His music intertwines traditional African styles with more modern folk music. His music is heavily acoustic in nature, as well as being lyrical, simply melodic and story-oriented.

“Unconditional” stays true to this form. Check it out above, and a Mulvey performance from the Paste Cloud below. Mulvey’s second album is set for release this year, with more details forthcoming.
