Now, Now Share Melodramatic New Single, “Enda”

Now, Now have released a melodramatic new single titled “Enda.” It feels as dark and overwhelming as it does neon and fluorescent. Most notably, it grants the emo-rock duo’s electro-pop fusion talents a moment in the foreground, resulting in four minutes and 11 seconds of interstellar dark-core.

“Enda means heart/center in elvish. The core of something,” explains Now, Now’s KC Dalager in a statement. “This song is about hating the things we do to ourselves that are in our control but feel out of our control.”

Now, Now returned from a six-year hiatus back in 2018 with their critically acclaimed album, SAVED. While known for their indie-rock ballads infused with elements of ‘90s-inspired fuzz and Midwestern emo, there’s long been a knack for more poppy, ambient sounds just waiting to break through to the forefront. “Enda” does it.

Sweeping electronic soundscapes dive headfirst into hard-hitting washes of percussion, exploding seamlessly into a chemical reaction that’s both sinister and seductive, and maybe a little bit retro arcade, too. There’s a markedly (yet not overpowering) 2000s-esque techno build-up (think turn-of-the-century raves to The Chemical Brothers) carried by an overarching tone of haunted earnestness.

“I do not want to glamorize the idea of hating yourself, I don’t think that’s a cool thing to do, but this song is definitely injected with self loathing and a little bit of arrogance. Feeling defeated by your own self and not knowing how to stop it,” Dalager explains further. “This song makes me feel like I’m at the bottom of a well. But I’m just silently sitting there and have made peace with the fact that I’m not getting out. I do not think that is a healthy place to always be, but I think it’s okay to allow yourself to feel that sometimes in order to get better. I struggle with depression and my sense of self worth as a person outside of making music. So this song is an embodiment of those feelings for me.”
