On Dec. 10, Jazz at Lincoln Center will host the Indo Jazz Festival, an evening of music and dance that aims to combine two of the world’s great improvisational forms of music. As part of the event, the Parul Shah Dance Company will perform with accompaniment from a three-piece ensemble comprising tabla, violin and cello. The company’s founder, Parul Shah, an internationally acclaimed dancer and choreographer in the Kathak style of Indian classical dance, endeavors to expand the classical medium beyond cultural boundaries, preserving the form’s aesthetic integrity while developing a unique vocabulary.
In the lead-up to the Indo Jazz Festival, Shah will visit Paste Studio on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. EST to showcase some of the sights and sounds that await Lincoln Center festivalgoers. Her work, explains her official website, “builds on the dance form’s mythological storytelling roots to explore universal narratives, using a rich movement vocabulary that communicates the dynamic and often paradoxical nature of modern life.”
