Exclusive: Penelope Isles Share Lovely New Single, “Round”

U.K. indie-rock outfit Penelope Isles have shared another new single from their forthcoming debut album Until the Tide Creeps In, out July 12 on Bella Union. “Round,” debuting right here at Paste this morning, follows lead single “Chlorine,” both of which have us eagerly anticipating the band’s full-length debut.

Jack Wolter, who splits songwriting duties with his sister Lily (Jack Sowton and Becky Redford round out the quartet) and self-produced Until the Tide Creeps In, describes “Round” as “a love song—a collection of moments and thoughts of what it’s like to be in love,” one that encompasses “all the beautiful moments and all the difficult times too, going round full-circle. The verses are like the beautiful times that we will always remember where the chorus is the truth of how it’s not always that easy.”

“Round” is another irresistible preview of Penelope Isles’ shockingly fully formed sound, a blend of psych-rock and dream-pop that’s sweet but never cloying, bold but never indulgent. Deft guitar and bass notes are interwoven under Wolter’s falsetto vocals, waves of reverb crashing and receding as he wonders “if you’re okay / we’re okay,” before the song comes back “Round” again.

The Wolter siblings’ chemistry is undeniable—though six years apart, their bond is built on music, as they previously performed together in a band called Your Gold Teeth (named, seemingly, for a Steely Dan track). Penelope Isles, though, is the name you’ll need to know in 2019 and beyond.

Listen to “Round” below and find Penelope Isles’ U.K./E.U. tour dates further down. You can preorder Until the Tide Creeps In here.
