Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson has teamed up once again with singer-songwriter Pete Yorn to release new music. The poppy “Bad Dreams” is the first track coming from the duo’s forthcoming EP, Apart, set to release via Capitol Music Group on June 1.
Apart marks the duo’s first collaboration since their 2009 album, Break Up. The forthcoming EP will feature four new songs, as well as a cover of the single “Tomorrow,” found on Yorn’s most recent album, 2016’s ArrangingTime.
Yorn talked about the duo’s musical evolution and what their new EP means in relationship to their previous work, revealing in a statement:
If Break Up was dealing with an unraveling relationship, Apart is dealing with the aftermath. It acknowledges the array of heavy emotions that come up living separate lives. You’re getting used to the idea of not being with someone who has been a big part of your life. Even after a break up has occurred, the presence of an ex still seems to loom large in one’s mind for a while. There are moments during the day where you wonder, is it really over? Or will there be another chapter in the relationship now that it has evolved? The EP is an attempt to sort through all this and get comfortable with the excitement of new freedoms while facing underlying fears of the unknown road that lies ahead.
In regards to the duo’s return, Johansson added:
Being able to revisit this project with Pete in a totally different context but within the same creative parameters is a unique artistic opportunity for me. It is always a pleasure to sing with Pete because I think our voices and stories complement each other.
“Bad Dreams” was recorded over two days at the Spring Street studio in downtown L.A. Alongside the single, Yorn and Johansson have also released an accompanying music video, available exclusively on Apple Music. The music video, created by director Sophie Muller (Sade, Gwen Stefani, Annie Lennox), follows the pair through a trip in the night where their relationship is turned upside-down by a series of surreal moments, and in the end, we’re left wondering, “Was it all a dream?”
