Los Angeles trio Polyglam—Allie Stamler, Rachel White and John Sinclair—only have three singles out right now, but they’re all enchanting. The band was formed one summer when all three musicians were house-sitting a music producer’s home. After spending many days at the Silver Lake Reservoir, they made good on their shared creative connections and formed Polyglam. Debut single “Adored” arrived in April, while “Town” followed in September. Today, “Loss” works its magic on us, and it’s one of the dreamiest pop tracks of this autumn—and a massively gorgeous way to kick off December.
“Loss” is a tune about “the cyclical nature of relationships.” According to the band, the song “explores a painful process: the feeling of paralysis in the aftermath of a failed relationship you took for granted, and the simultaneous realization that you’re supposed to move forward.” Likewise, Stamler, White and Sinclair mine the dynamics of love and embrace the profundity of absence. “She knows before the word hits your lips,” Stamler sings out. “You go along, the situation has you as its pawn and it plays you like you’re already a loss.”
Polyglam are still relatively new, but their first three offerings are quickly establishing the trio as a group to watch. Between Stamler’s lead vocals, Sinclair’s backing vox and the whole unit’s approach to dream-pop that employs strings, synths and dense harmonics, “Loss” is the kind of song that sounds airy and weightless, yet the work inside it is immense and couples together to build an unforgettable palette of joy and immeasurable delicacy.
