Today, Chicago-born psych-rock band Post Animal have announced their next studio album, IRON, due out for release on July 25 via Polyvinyl/AWAL. Dalton Allison, Jake Hirshland, Javier Reyes, Wesley Toledo, and Matt Williams have been making music together for over a decade, and IRON marks the triumphant return of their founding member, actor-musician Joe Keery, who left the band in 2017, after the release of When I Think of You a Castle, to focus on his role as Steve Harrington in Stranger Things. IRON marks the band’s first LP release since 2022’s Love Gibberish.
Recently, all five Post Animal members were featured on Keery’s newest Djo album, The Crux. According to a press release, the six-piece got together in 2024 and rekindled their years-long musical chemistry, recording IRON in rural Indiana. The album was produced by Post Animal, engineered by Allison and Charles Glanders, and mixed by Allison and Djo co-producer Adam Thein. “This record felt like a revitalization of our friendships and our band,” Hirshland says. “We always work collaboratively, but it’s amazing how reintroducing Joe into the mix brought back that dynamic from 2017.”
