Montreal post-punk outfit Pottery have shared the details of their debut album Welcome to Bobby’s Motel and released a new cut, “Texas Drums Pt I & II.” The album is dropping on April 10 via Partisan Records. They’ve also shared a new music video, which accompanies part one of their new track, and was directed by Pottery’s Paul Jacobs and Jacob Shepansky in collaboration with Meagan Callen and Charlie Coote. Last year, Paste named Pottery’s debut EP, No. 1, one of the year’s best, and we also named Pottery one of the 20 best new artists of 2019.
The full version of “Texas Drums Pt I & II” (which you can listen to down below) rides a wave of funky percussion and rollicking guitars. It’s their most hypnotic song to date, leaning on psychedelic spoken-word and heady grooves, but it fits into the surreal world that they began to curate on No. 1. The song’s video follows a pair of mustachioed, unibrowed scallywags on their cinematic adventures, and they’re easily imagined as regulars in Bobby’s Motel.
Per a press release, the album title is an inside joke between the band. “Bobby” represents Pottery, and his “Motel” is essentially “wherever they are.” The band wrote in a statement:
Bobby is a pilot, a lumberjack, a stay at home dad, and a disco dancer that never rips his pants. He’s a punching bag filled with comic relief. He laughs in the face of day-to-day ambiguity, as worrying isn’t worth it to Bobby. There’s a piece of him in everyone, there to remind us that things are probably going to work out, maybe. He’s you. He’s him. He’s her. He’s them.
