Montreal five-piece Pottery have shared a new track, “The Craft,” from their forthcoming debut EP No. 1, out May 10 via Partisan Records and Royal Mountain Records. “The Craft” also comes with an accompanying music video directed by Bronwyn Ford and Max Taeuschel.
Following the release of previous singles “Hank Williams” and “Lady Solinas,” “The Craft” is Pottery’s most frenetic cut to date. It melds the best of wobbly post-punk and freakish art-pop profundity—retro keyboards gleam, angular guitars chime, paranoid vocals twitch and sharp lyrics astonish.
Per a press release, the video depicts lead singer/guitarist Austin Boylan as an alien who tries to make sense of human behavior. The band added, “With ‘The Craft’ we wanted to explore the unconscious oddities of everyday life and how an outsider alien (Austin’s character) may interpret these trivial actions. In the video each band member has a niche hobby that not only lends itself to blind emulation from the outsider, but also represents each member’s individuality within our collective project.”
After previously touring with Thee Oh Sees, Parquet Courts and Viagra Boys, Pottery will tour North America again later this year supporting Fontaines D.C. They will also make an appearance at this year’s Iceland Airwaves festival.
