Ahead of the release of his debut album bubba, Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Preston Woolsey has shared “Your Combination,” an ode to his childhood dog Boudreaux (nicknamed Bubba). The record, due out May 30 via Rose Garden, was written by Woolsey in response to the life he shared with Bubba, which began in middle school and spanned until the musician’s time in the Air Force.
Around that time, Bubba was diagnosed with cancer. “Every time I’d go home, I’d think this is it, this is the last time,” Woolsey says. “What do you say to your dog when you know it’s going to be the last thing you say?” bubba is Woolsey’s attempt at an answer. “Your Combination” is full of grief but sewn together with gratitude, as Woolsey sketches his days in Louisiana, Missouri, and basic training. There’s a lot of loving in a track like this, one that made me hug my pup a little harder after writing this copy.
