If you’re reading this before watching the session, you’re in for quite the experience. Prettiest Eyes is one of those bands that reignites your excitement about music and instills in you the belief that music can be fun, wild, and weird, while also being quite forward-thinking. I strain to put a label on their music, and that’s the best thing about it. Prettiest Eyes stomps around in a sort of progressive-funk-jazz, an absolute cacophony of wailing synths, erratic drumming, and grinding bass lines. The experiment of the band is pitting as many noises as possible against each other and coming out the other side with an easily danceable track. While you might lose your sense of melody, you won’t ever lose track of the rhythms in the music. Conventions are broken here, so don’t expect to hear something you’ve heard before. There must be something special about the people in this band. I feel like a lot of people try to be this weird, this inventive, but fall flat on their faces and end up being overtly derivative of something else. But Prettiest Eyes truly excels at being themselves and not really caring who sees. They’re having as much fun as we are, and might just be discovering the music concurrently with the listeners. There’s an improvisational attitude that may or may not actually be there, because at a second listen the songs really do have a structure to them, even if it isn’t as clear as the verse-chorus-verse-bridge-chorus structure that we’re endlessly steeped in. The ending of the last song comes as a surprise: in the middle of it all everyone stops at the exact same time. We’re snapped out of the dream and left wondering if what we just experienced was reality or a figment of our deepest imaginations.
