The activist rock/rap outfit Prophets of Rage have announced their debut self-titled album with the release of the energetic lead single “Unfuck the World.”
Composed of Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, Brad Wilk and Tim Commerford, and rappers Chuck D of Public Enemy, B Real of Cypress Hill and DJ Lord, Prophets of Rage joined forces last year in direct response to a tumultuous election season and all the divisiveness that came with it.
Since their formation, the group has kept busy— releasing an EP, the North American “Make America Rage Again Tour” and a disruptive protest performance at the Republican National Convention.
Now, the band is set to release a 12-track LP on Sept. 15 via Fantasy Records, with a cover illustrated by Shepard Fairey. The album, produced by longtime Rage Against the Machine collaborator Brendan O’Brien, integrates divergent styles to make a cohesive and thought-provoking project promoting love, peace and protest all at once.
“When we first got together, we were playing songs from our catalogue, but we were also playing new grooves, with everyone improvising. And that felt really good,” said Wilk. “Soon there was a language that all of us speak.”
“Unfuck the World” is an anthemic cry for change. The music video, directed by Michael Moore, is full of compelling visuals highlighting the most prominent current social issues. Police brutality, millennials addiction to social media, militarism, processed foods, Kendall Jenner’s controversial Pepsi ad, and countless images mocking President Trump all appear in the video.
