Protomartyr and Preoccupations Will Cover Each Other’s Songs on New Seven-Inch Split

Protomartyr have shared their cover of Preoccupation’s “Forbidden,” off a forthcoming seven-inch split Telemetry at Howe Bridge, out Nov. 16 on Domino Records. The seven-inch will feature each band covering a song from the other’s discography, with Preoccupations covering “Pontiac ‘87.” It’s a concept that Protomartyr introduced earlier this year with the band Spray Paint. The Protomartyr/Preoccupations split comes in anticipation of their upcoming co-headlining tour, which begins in November.

The post-punk and hardcore influences the bands share make this pairing feel totally natural, inevitable even. Protomartyr’s heightened drama and crashing dynamism shifts “Forbidden” from gently lilting jaunt to crushing hardcore anthem. They extend the song to nearly double its length, of course drawing out the ending’s ten-second tempo change to two minutes of pummeling fuzz.

“There’s an old adage that goes something like, ‘if you’re going to cover a song by a beloved Canadian band, it’s best to pick the second shortest one.’ So, ‘Forbidden’ it is,” Protomartyr singer Joe Casey said in a statement. “We all really liked the outro part and had the brilliant idea to extend it. And that, my friends, is how you make musical history.”
