Queen’s Greatest Hits is the U.K.’s Highest-Selling Album Ever

Music News

Surrounded by acts like The Beatles, Adele and ABBA, Queen’s Greatest Hits album has officially been named the best-selling U.K. album of all time.

In celebration of its 60th anniversary, the UK’s Official Albums Chart has compiled a list of the 60 top-selling albums. Queen’s 1981 Greatest Hits takes the number-one spot by a landslide, being the only album to break 6 million sales on the chart (the album is currently at 6.1 million sales, to be exact). It spent four weeks in the number-one spot and an impressive 158 weeks in the top 40. The album is exactly what it’s called—Queen’s most recognized songs—and it’s hard to skim the track list without immediately hearing the chorus of each in your head. Their Greatest Hits II follows closely, taking the number-10 spot with almost 4 million sales.

Said Brian May, Queen guitarist, to Official Charts: “What a great bit of news to wake up to! The most popular album? Well, I always thought the band showed promise, but this is beyond our boyhood dreams! Thanks folks!” Drummer Roger Taylor echoed, “Incredible … marvelous … humbling … thank you … I feel good!”

Following Queen’s Greatest Hits on the list of the best 60 is ABBA’s Gold – Greatest Hits with more than 5.1 million sales since its 1992 release, and then The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band right at 5.1 million albums sold. Adele’s 21 landed at number four, and her 25 takes the 27th spot. Michael Jackson landed two spots in the top ten with Oasis, Pink Floyd and Dire Straits. See the full list here.
