Red Hot Chili Peppers Cancel Performances After Anthony Kiedis’ Hospitalization

On Saturday, May 14, at the annual KROQ Weenie Roast in Irvine, Calif., Red Hot Chili Peppers were forced to cancel shortly prior to their scheduled performance after frontman Anthony Kiedis began experiencing intense stomach pain backstage, later specified by the band as “complications from the intestinal flu.” According to a KROQ representative, Kiedis was taken to a local hospital from the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre, where he is currently recovering.

The band has issued a statement confirming Anthony Kiedis’ condition and recovery, thanking fans for their support and postponing their performance on May 17 at iHeartRadio Theater in Burbank, Calif. At press time, the band has yet to comment on upcoming performances at Rock on the Range in Columbus, Ohio on May 23 and BottleRock in Napa, Calif. on May 29.

Before the cancelled performance on Saturday, bassist Flea and drummer Chad Smith were interviewed by KROQ, explaining their history of performing at the Weenie Roast as well as discussing the details of their upcoming studio album, The Getaway, slated for release by Warner Bros this June 17. After the release, the band is scheduled for an intensive summer tour of Europe and is headlining Chicago’s Lollapalooza alongside Radiohead and LCD Soundsystem in July. Watch the interview below.
