Reina del Cid is a songwriter hailing from Minneapolis. This band is a perfect example of what happens when a focused songwriter expands their vision into a full-band setting. There’s always the possibility that an expansion like that doesn’t work, that the personality of the songwriter is blundered by the added instruments or all the extra stuff comes out underwhelming. The opposite is true with Reina Del Cid, whose music is light and personal—an exact balance of personalities. There’s something for everyone in Reina’s folk rock music. The lyrics are smart and full of intention, there is sentiment and celebration, and the songwriter is surrounded by talented musicians who widen the scope of each song. The last song in this session is about Virginia Woolf. It’s louder and has more of a rock feel than the others, especially up against the prior song which is much gentler. The shift showcases not only their versatility but also how good electric guitar can sound on a folk song. The chemistry between them reminds me of the chemistry between Jeff Tweedy and Nels Cline of Wilco, but only in form. Reina del Cid is an original act that you’re bound to hear more about in the future.
