Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever Return With New Single, “Mainland”

Melbourne, Australia indie rockers Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever have resurfaced to share their first new material of 2018 in “Mainland.” A press release teases “a big year for the Sub Pop-signed five-piece”—that and “Mainland” alike are music to our ears.

The sunny, yet somber song was inspired by singer/songwriter/guitarist Tom Russo’s 2017 trip to his grandparents’ birthplace: the Aeolian Islands off Sicily. “I was reading about a refugee crisis unfolding not far away in the Mediterranean Sea,” recalls Russo. “The song is about longing, disillusionment, privilege and holding on to love as a kind of shield.”

“Mainland” is the first new song from Rolling Blackouts C.F. since their acclaimed spring 2017 EP The French Press—shortly after that EP’s release, we highlighted the band as The Best of What’s Next, and its title track later landed on our list of 2017’s best songs. Russo and company recorded their new single in a secluded house in Australia’s Northern New South Wales wilderness.

Rolling Blackouts C.F. have a number of noteworthy tour dates on their 2018 slate, including sets at Coachella and Shaky Knees, as well as overseas fest Laneway. The band’s world tour slate will take them through North America, the U.K. and Europe surrounding their festival stops.
