SACRED PAWS are a really good band, y’all. Earlier this month, we featured their single, “Turn Me Down,” in one of our best new songs columns. Our very own Casey Epstein-Gross applauded Ray Aggs and Eilidh Rodgers’ abilities to “master the art of emotional sleight-of-hand, wrapping raw vulnerability in a technicolor sonic jumpsuit while their bouncy guitars skip and hop like children playing double-dutch with power lines, harmonies soaring overhead.” “Turn Me Down” was a taste of SACRED PAWS’ forthcoming album (and first since 2019, when they released their debut record Run Around the Sun), Jump Into Life, which will disperse in-full on March 28 via Merge Records.
Today, the Glasgow/London duo have unveiled the next chapter of the sophomore effort, “Fall for You.” The song is bright, conjured into focus by a kaleidoscopic riff and crystal-clear vocals tumbling in circles like clothes in a washing machine. Aggs and Rodgers say that the guitar riff “came about whilst we were jamming and felt a bit like a puzzle that we needed to solve to fit it into a song structure.” The song’s “uneasy time signature” inspired Aggs’ lyrics about “feeling on the edge of something emotionally devastating and fighting to stay balanced.” “Jack’s guitar solo at the end took the song into an even weirder melodic space that was also really exciting when he came in the studio to record it,” the band explain. “The strings added even more drama, in a way that almost felt like too much, but we decided to take the plunge.”
