Sad13 Releases “Devil In U,” Third Single Off Forthcoming Solo Debut

“I’m your favorite person, but you don’t approve.” Speedy Ortiz’s Sadie Dupuis takes on the phenomenon of people who try to control what they love in “Devil In U,” the third single off her forthcoming debut solo album as Sad13, Slugger.
Dupuis sings about trying to rise to the expectations of a temperamental partner by living life as inoffensively as possible:
I observe the moon
Keep my puppy groomed
And read my books all the way through
And when I’m with my crew I proffer to you proof
‘Cause that’s what an angel would do
Who’s stuck with the devil in you
The music alternates between an uneasy minor groove and catchy, jaunty sections—the angel and devil rear their heads in turn.
“No devil is worth your care if they don’t love and support you for who you are,” Dupuis declared in a press release. “And if the ‘Devil In U’ causes you to hurt someone you supposedly love, maybe you’re just the devil, period.”
