Philadelphia singer-songwriter (Sandy) Alex G, aka Alex Giannascoli, is playing more shows to promote his latest full-length, Rocket.
Released last year, Rocket is his eighth LP and while it’s a seemingly genre-defying collage of sounds, Giannascoli’s warm, earnest lyrics and idiosyncratic, yet approachable songwriting links everything together. Due to his unique writing and recording style, his music often requires multiple listens to harvest all the seeds he’s planted. The brilliance of his country-tinged ballads (e.g. “Proud,” “Powerful Man” and “Bobby”) manifests itself upon first listen, while his more complex, avant-garde tracks like “Poison Root,” “Brick” and “Alina” need time to fully unveil themselves to the listener, though it’s all the more rewarding when their genius is eventually realized.
In Paste’s full review of the LP, Ben Salmon wrote, ”[(Sandy) Alex G] doesn’t seem satisfied with being a preternaturally talented indie-pop-rock singer-songwriter. He wants more.” Salmon continues, “He wants to try it all. He’s as interested in misshaping a great song as he is perfecting it. Most of the truly great ones have that quality. (Sandy) Alex G seems headed that way.”
After recently touring with Fleet Foxes and fellow Philadelphia band Dr. Dog, and making festival stops at Sasquatch, Boston Calling, Primavera Sound and Pitchfork Music Festival, Giannascoli has announced North American fall headlining dates, including two nights in his hometown and his biggest New York headlining show to date.
