(Sandy) Alex G shared his new track, “Hope,” along with its music video, and also announced international 2019 and 2020 tour dates on Tuesday.
The track will appear on House of Sugar, the ninth full-length album from (Sandy) Alex G, aka multi-instrumentalist Alex Giannascoli, out Sept. 13 via Domino.
“Hope” opens with Giannascoli’s signature intricate acoustic strumming, and features haunting backing synthesizers and poignant lyrics. “He was a good friend of mine / he died,” Giannascoli sings, “Why write about it now? / Gotta honor him somehow / Saw some people crying that night / Yeah, Fentanyl took a few lives from our life.”
With several instrumental solos and Giannascoli’s ability to combine elements of intimate indie-folk and lo-fi, “Hope” is vulnerable, raw, and puts his lyrical strengths on full display. “In the house they were calling out his name all night,” Giannascoli continues, “Taking turns on the bed, throwing bottles from the windows of the home on Hope Street.”
For two minutes and 36 seconds, a perplexing wooden puppet dances on a loop in the music video for “Hope.” Graffiti and a parked car can be seen in the background on what appears to be a city street.
(Sandy) Alex G has also announced international fall 2019 and winter 2020 tour dates, with stops in the U.S., U.K. and across Europe. Tickets will go on sale Friday, July 19, at 10 a.m. local.
