Fay Milton of Savages Shares First Four Interviews in Climate Change Docu-series Very Important Things

Savages drummer Fay Milton has released the first four interviews in her new and ongoing interview-based documentary series Very Important Things, which focuses on climate change.

“We all seem to feel that sense of impending doom, especially since the start of this year with endless shootings, terror attacks and far right politics,” says Milton in a statement. “My life was changed in early 2014 when I read This Changes Everything by Naomi Klein. I no longer just had a loose sense a looming apocalypse, I had the facts and evidence of Klein’s research and the power of her narrative in my mind to tell me this is real, this is really happening and there’s no time left to procrastinate.”

The sense of despair about the future of the planet and its inhabitants motivated Milton to create this documentary series, which takes a stark look at the effects of climate change. “Climate change is not just a problem of burning fossil fuels, but also a problem of capitalism, of white supremacy and of inequality,” Milton explains. “Luckily, we are also in an age where information spreads so quickly and that there has never been a better time for our society to evolve into one that has the knowledge to overcome all of these problems.”

With the sense of utter dread and helplessness that so often accompanies the mere mention of climate change, it’s reassuring that someone out there is encouraging dialogue, discussion and critical thinking about the issue.

My life was changed in early 2014 when I read This Changes Everything by Naomi Klein, I no longer just had a loose sense a looming apocalypse, I had the facts and evidence of Klein’s research and the power of her narrative in my mind to tell me this is real, this is really happening and there’s no time left to procrastinate.

We are at an incredibly volatile moment in history, and it’s a really essential time to try to collective steer the world in a positive direction. As we’ve been pummelled with 24hr world news for the last few decades, trying to make a positive difference in the world has become a very confusing and daunting prospect. However, as world tensions are rising, it is becoming more and more clear that the injustices we see are all interrelated. Climate change is not just a problem of burning fossil fuels, but also a problem of capitalism, of white supremacy and of inequality. Luckily, we are also in an age where information spreads so quickly and that there has never been a better time for our society to evolve into one that has the knowledge to overcome all of these problems.

In an attempt to add to this pool of knowledge, I decided to create a series of interviews, learning about different perspectives of the climate problem. As I was just about to embark on 8 months of touring (the least environmentally friendly activity of all time, I’m very conflicted about this), I thought I would use this opportunity to speak to people from around Europe and North America and spread the expert and/or local knowledge they had.

This is the first four interviews from what I consider to be an ongoing series.
