The form of the bliss that might or might not be found in Shuteye’s music is composed of uncertain terms. We’re sure that we hear it in there somewhere — somewhere amongst the digital snow and the black ice. It’s in there somewhere, a feeling of ecstasy – that feeling that makes you crave it if you’ve been deprived of it for a long enough period of time. It’ll drive you crazy if you let it.
The electronic duo from Chicago, comprised of vocalist Elysia Hang-fu and DJ/producer Alena Ratner, compose their songs with a hand on the vibey line of intersection between sweet love and forbidden fruit. There’s waiting and wondering streaming throughout their full-length album, “Hush Hush,” as if there will be no clear conclusions for any of the people in these songs for a goodly amount of time. They’re going to be straining and walking the cold streets chain-smoking their way through the confusion until something finally comes through that reminds them of what they haven’t felt in a while. They could call it happiness, or by a different name.
