Photo by Pierce PyrzenskiToday, Sierra Spirt—the solo project of Native American singer, songwriter and performer Sierra Spirit Kihega—has released a new single called “better wild.” The tune is the latest offering from Sierra’s upcoming debut EP coin toss, and the song is a country-style confessional aimed at universal familiarity but firmly rooted in her indigenous existence. The track conjures Western themes of cowboys, mustangs, boots and bars, as Sierra reckons with the molecular levels of raising hell through a bit of twang and a lot of celebratory, wholehearted energy. “You’ll tip your hat and ride away, a desperado on the plains,” she sings. “Loneliness, the price I pay for love.”
All of it—the yearning, the Oklahoma dirt and the community—feels so extraordinarily right as it aches through the core of “better wild.” “Sometimes we meet people who just can’t commit and feel like being exclusive takes away their freedom,” Sierra says. “This track follows the mental progression of letting go of someone who never wanted to be yours to begin with.”
coin toss is due out October 10 via Giant Music. Listen to “better wild” below.
