Updated: Sinead O’Connor Reportedly Located After Being Reported Missing

Update: The Wilmette Beacon reports that O’Connor has been found, sharing the following via Twitter: “Breaking News from Wilmette Police: Sinead O’Connor has been located. She is safe and is no longer listed s [sic] a missing/ endangered person.”

Irish singer-songwriter Sinead O’Connor has been reported missing in the Chicago suburb of Wilmette after going on a bike ride early on the morning of Sunday, May 15 and not returning. An anonymous caller contacted the Wilmette Police Department and expressed concern about the singer possibly being suicidal, particularly given her history of mental illness. A check-for-well-being alert has been sent out in the area, but no further information has been provided by the police.

O’Connor has long dealt with controversy over the course of her career, which has spanned three decades. Rising to fame in the late 1980s with her first album The Lion and the Cobra and finding global acclaim with her arrangement of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” the singer has often found herself in hot water over the years, memorably ripping up a photo of Pope John Paul II on a live television broadcast in 1992 and frequently vocalizing her criticisms against the Roman Catholic Church. In light of the recent death of Prince, whose song launched her into the international spotlight in the early ‘90s, O’Connor has recently been sued for libel by comedian Arsenio Hall for accusing him of abetting the late singer’s drug addiction. O’Connor reportedly also had a less-than-friendly relationship with the pop star while he was alive, even recalling an altercation that occurred between them upon their first meeting.

Often using social media as a platform to discuss her ongoing battles with mental illness, O’Connor has publicly pleaded for help in the past during her struggles with depression. Last year, after cancelling all of her summer tour dates while citing exhaustion from an unresolved medical issue, O’Connor took to Facebook and wrote a vicious tirade (which has since been deleted) against her family after reportedly overdosing in a Dublin hotel room. Calling out their lack of support as “hypocrisy,” the singer claimed to have cut ties with them in November of last year.

O’Connor has a long history of mental health issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder and suicidal tendencies. A spokesperson for the singer has not been able to be reached for further comment.
