Sloan Peterson Shares Artful Video for Debut Single “105”

Joe Jackson is an Australian-based singer-songwriter who has been making music in her native Sydney since she was 16 years old, but her new single under the name Sloan Peterson (not to be confused with Sloane Peterson) is probably the first time most people are hearing from her.

And “105,” the first track from Jackson’s first self-titled EP as Sloan Peterson, due out this summer, is a fairly auspicious debut to make. The bouncing track tips its hat to ‘50s guitar pop and modern-era garage rock, two fundamental influences on Jackson’s work. And the video, which just dropped today, feels like an even grander opening gesture.

In the Pete Moore-directed clip for “105,” Jackson is joined by alumni dancers from the Australian Ballet School and Sydney Dance Company who are just a marvel to watch move. At one point, they’re tugging on a makeshift rope that’s attached to Jackson, and it’s both alluring and a bit unsettling. Jackson sings about a “lack of devotion” in the song but there’s no sign of that here.

Jackson said of the song in a statement:

I wrote “105” pretty absentmindedly and at the time I don’t think I even knew if the 105 was an actual highway or street at all, ha! But the last verse was written about a lost lover of mine, who clearly lacked emotion and devotion, making my life at that period a little painful. It was a natural development of words from my heart; a sense of having someone but not really having them at all, trying to figure out all the question marks that go around relationships.
