Scottish alternative-rock band Snow Patrol released on Thursday the latest single off their forthcoming album Wildness, due out on May 25 via Polydor/Republic Records. The hauntingly beautiful single, “Life on Earth,” follows Wildness’ debut track, “Don’t Give In,” released last month, a few days after the album’s announcement. The “Life on Earth” music video was premiered on Thursday by British Astronaut Tim Peake, shot at the European Space Agency in Holland.

The out-of-this-world video features Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody as a lonesome spaceman, drifting in the dark emptiness of the cosmos as he watches over his newly formed family below. The video perfectly captures the single’s message of loneliness as images of planet Earth accompany the song’s dark acoustic guitar. In his lyrics, Lightbody recalls everyday memories of the human experience, from his first encounter with snow to his first dance, before revealing in the chorus, “It shouldn’t need to be so fucking hard, this is life on earth”—a sentiment to which we can surely all relate.

In regards to the band’s forthcoming album, Lightbody revealed in a statement that the project came about as a search for “clarity and connection,” adding:

I think it’s the first record I’ve ever written that I haven’t just asked a bunch of questions. I actually tried to figure out why I was unhappy, why I feel out of place, why I’m afraid,” Lightbody said. “There’s nothing really to protect myself for— it’s all in the album. I want to remember.

Lightbody suggests that, in a lot of ways, memory serves as the defining theme of Wildness, partially inspired by the musician’s father, who is currently suffering from dementia.

Wildness will be the band’s first record in seven years and it’s already shaping up to be a deeply meaningful project. You can preorder the album right here.

On Wednesday night, Snow Patrol performed their first live show since August of 2013 at London’s Islington Assembly Hall. The band will now continue their tour through the U.S. and Europe, with shows scheduled across the U.K., California, New York and Ireland.
