Last week, a truly Paste-core concert happened at Variety Playhouse in Atlanta. Soccer Mommy and L’Rain shared a bill together, and it was the place to be Wednesday night. In December 2023, on the heels of her acclaimed, AOTY-worthy LP I Killed Your Dog, we named L’Rain a digital cover star. Music editor Matt Mitchell wrote that, “[L’Rain] is always making music that has to be released at the exact moment that it actually is, always picking up nuggets of context and curiosity from the world around her, watching how people respond to certain ideas and, then, directly responding to those presentations herself.”

Flash-forward to a year later, and Soccer Mommy took the cover star mantle herself to celebrate the release of her great record Evergreen. Mitchell again wrote, “Just like Clean, color theory and Sometimes, Forever, Sophie Allison wrote her fourth Soccer Mommy album alone, but it’s as much a part of our language now as it is hers, growing pains and all—a folk record for the true romantics, and a delightful, challenging counterpoint to life’s ugliest pathways.”

At Variety Playhouse, Soccer Mommy delivered a career-spanning setlist, playing “circle the drain,” “Bones,” “M” and “Your Dog.” Allison continues to be one of the best live acts around, and her US tour will trudge onward across the East Coast before turning into the Midwest and Southwest in February.
