Soccer Mommy Dances with the Devil on Dreamy New Single, “lucy”

Soccer Mommy, aka Nashville singer-songwriter Sophie Allison, has shared her first new single of 2019, the dreamy yet devilish “lucy.” It remains to be seen whether the song is part of a new project or merely a one-off, but new music from Allison couldn’t be more welcome after her breakout 2018 album Clean landed near the top of Paste’s list of the best albums of last year.

“lucy” (here referring to the fallen angel Lucifer a la Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly) opens with spidery, effects-heavy guitars scuttling across the mix, all relentless melody, but with an unsettling edge. Meanwhile, a cucumber-cool Allison warns of “the root of all evil in a person with shiny eyes,” both personifying and assessing her moral decline; she recognizes that she’s being toyed with and seduced by darkness, but can’t break away. “Succumbing to evil / I thought I could never be,” Allison sings, “I look in the mirror / and the darkness looks back at me.” Her lyrics are coded into a The Matrix-esque visual created by Zev Deans & Lordess Foudre, as if the song is writing itself.

“‘lucy’ is a really fun song for me because it has a dark, evil vibe,” says Allison of her new single. “It’s a song about struggling with inner demons and your own morality, but I masked it with this scenario of being seduced by the devil. I’m really excited to share this with everyone because I think it shows a different side of my writing.”

“lucy” will be released on 7-inch vinyl via Loma Vista Recordings, with copies shipping in late November. You can preorder yours right here.

Soccer Mommy’s upcoming tour dates include some of Allison’s biggest shows yet, including performances in support of Vampire Weekend and Wilco.
