Ad-Rock Remixed Spoon’s “Can I Sit Next To You”

The Beastie Boy turns the Hot Thoughts cut into a boom-bap toe-tapper

Ad-Rock Remixed Spoon’s “Can I Sit Next To You”

Indie-rock veterans Spoon, still riding high after the 2017 release of their acclaimed latest album, have shared a skeletal and stylish remix of Hot Thoughts cut “Can I Sit Next To You,” put together by none other than Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz of the Beastie Boys.

Hot Thoughts is Spoon’s most remix-ready album to date, with danceable electronic adventurousness all over it. Jeff Leven praised the record as “a disarmingly subtle way of taking a meaningful evolutionary step as a band” in his review for Paste.

Ad-Rock’s remix mutates the new Spoon sound even further by stripping their single down, rebuilding it over a propulsive boom-bap beat and using Britt Daniel’s voice as a pulsating instrument that serves the remix’s insistent rhythm. Gone are the song’s funky guitars and ostentatious synths, replaced by a drum-and-bass daze best enjoyed through headphones.

Spoon head out on the next leg of their world tour in May, playing a handful of shows in the U.S. before hopping across the pond for more in Europe. In mid-June, they kick off a co-headlining tour with Grizzly Bear, with $1 per ticket sold going to PLUS1 in support of the Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund mission to prevent gun violence and build safer communities.
