Starz Digital Acquires Distribution Rights to Sharon Jones Documentary

Today, Starz Digital announced its acquisition of North American distribution rights to the music documentary Miss Sharon Jones!, directed by Academy Award-winner Barbara Kopple. The film recently had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and was also screened at SXSW, as well as the Sarasota Film Festival, winning an Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature at the latter.

The documentary follows the eponymous Sharon Jones and her band, the Dap-Kings, during a tumultuous, formative period in the iconic soul singer’s life—intimate footage captures the diva’s struggle with her cancer diagnosis and her battle to return to both the studio and the stage as her success hits an all-time peak. A celebratory and triumphant film, fans of the artist will be sure to enjoy the music-fueled behind-the-scenes look at an intense, volatile, but ultimately exultant year in the soul group’s career.

Miss Sharon Jones! will be opened for theatrical release on July 29, later followed by digital, on-demand and home video releases in the fall.
