Daily Dose: Stove, “Stiff Bones”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

“Stiff Bones” is the latest single from Connecticut fuzz-rockers Stove, and the last we’ll get from them before their sophomore album ’s Favorite Friend (not a typo!) arrives this Wednesday, Oct. 31, on Exploding In Sound Records.

Led by Ovlov guitarist/vocalist and prolific songwriter Steve Hartlett, Stove also features drummer/vocalist Jordyn Blakeley, bassist Alex Molini and guitarist Mike Hammond. The quartet made their debut with 2015’s Is Stupider before putting out dual 2016 EPs Is A Toad In The Rain and Is The Meat That Fell Out.

’s Favorite Friend finds Stove seeking refuge in art: The album was written and recorded after Hartlett and Blakely had both recently lost loved ones, and the resulting songs reckon with “grief and the sometimes harsh realities of time passing,” per a press release.

That search for catharsis plays out in “Stiff Bones,” on which Hartlett’s rueful yowls, Blakeley’s powerful drums and an onslaught of washed-out guitars push through upheaval to find peace. “When you try to play it off / as if your heart is truly soft / You gave away / and slave away / Alone is how you want to be / so lonely’s what you’ll feel with me / and everyone / not anyone,” Hartlett and Blakeley sing as one.

Stove have also announced a number of U.S. tour dates alongside their new song, adding some 19 new shows spanning the East Coast and Midwest, beginning with an album release show at Brooklyn’s Alphaville on Nov. 3. Their Exploding In Sound labelmate Maneka will provide support on the tour.
