Liverpool singer/songwriter Alex Stephens—who performs as Strawberry Guy—has put together a strings version of his breakout track “Mrs. Magic,” which has more than 260,000,000 streams on Spotify thanks to some TikTok virality in the three years since its release. Stephens took his sublime, timeless, home-recorded track and recorded an absolutely killer hi-fi rendition in Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios in Wiltshire.

Since putting out his debut LP Sun Outside My Window in 2021, Stephens has remained pretty quiet. In a roaring return last month, the dream pop scale of Stephens’ OG “Mrs. Magic” arrived still alive and intact in the new strings translation. On top of that true-to-form, delicate wonder, the work turns more pensive and sounds not like a track that saw its numbers boom after a social media takeover, but one fashioned through upgraded surroundings and a brighter, bolder artistic oeuvre. As Stephens looks towards the next chapter of Strawberry Guy, “Mrs. Magic (Strings Version)” is a perfect bridge from where the project was and where it might be going in the near future.
