Sufjan Stevens to Release Studio Recording of Reflections on May 19

After being commissioned to compose a score for choreographer Justin Peck’s ballet Reflections, multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens is preparing to release a studio recording of the songs. The accompaniments are performed by pianists Timo Andres and Conor Hanick, and will arrive on May 19 via Stevens’ longtime label Asthmatic Kitty Records.

To tease the project, Stevens, Andres and Hanick have released “Ekstasis,” a percussive instrumentation of delightful piano progressions. It’s meticulous, dreamy and whimsical, serving as a proper introduction to one of Stevens’ most-ambitious projects yet. With a focus on energy, light and duality, he says that he is “constantly thinking about bodies moving through space when I’m writing for ballet—that is what has informed this music, first and foremost.”
